Fruita runs amok against Montrose
By Tim Merris -
The Wildcats came back with a flurry in the fourth quarter in their game verses the Montrose Indians in very wet conditions.
Down 28-10 with only minutes left, Fruita canalized on some Montrose mistakes. The Wildcats converted on a couple fourth down plays before senior Vince Grasso’s touchdown run.
Montrose than fumbled on the next series and Fruita said thank you very much by scoring on a one yard run by junior Jacob Lynch. That made the score 28-25 with only a few minutes left to go in the game.
The Indians then tried to run out the clock only to fumble again on a muffed snap again turning the ball over to the Wildcats. Fruita took over on the Indians 42 yard line and moved it to 10 yard line when Brandon Kubic fumbled after catching a Lynch pass and Montrose recovered but then turned right around and fumbled back to the Wildcats.
One last chance to score and win the game fell just short as Lynch’s next pass was tipped and intercepted by the Indians. Game over.
Fruita fell to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in league play while Montrose moved to 4-3 overall and now leads the 4A/5A Southwest division with a 1-0 record.
Fruita goes on the road this week to take on the Durango Demons. The Demons are 3-4 overall and 1-1 in League play.
